A Night Out With Grown-ups and Good Music At The Kessler

http://novadallas.com
Friday night was a hoot. Literally... a hoot (actually several) and yodeling as well. Suzy, Geoff, Cat, Mike, Allen, Wendy, Melissa and I met up in Oak Cliff for a grown-up evening of food, booze and music. Good times!

We began the with drinks and dinner at Nova on Davis Street in Oak Cliff. Nova is a kitchy-cool sort of place with an interesting bowling ally/nouveau gourmet spin on just about everything. Don't get me wrong - it's good. Very good. But a little odd, like a Coen Brothers film (think Raising Arizona).

Texas Toyota, the Tundra and Me - Pt. 2

Texas Toyota made good on the issue with the scratched grill... and much more quickly than I expected. They actually had the new grill installed on Friday!

I have to admit, that is excellent customer service. Thanks, Texas Toyota!

The truck looks great and Melissa and I have had a great weekend cruising around town in it. What a great truck!

Texas Toyota, the Tundra and Me.

A couple of weeks ago I bought this beautiful silver-sky-metallic 2011 Toyota Tundra CrewMax from Texas Toyota in Grapevine, TX. This truck is excellent. It looks great, drives great and is great big.

The only real complaint that I've got up to this point is the hassle with Texas Toyota. I actually like Texas Toyota very much -- in fact, I've bought a number of vehicles from them. But they can be slick and today they pissed me off.

To give a bit of background to the situation, I'll tell you some about the buying experience with this beautiful truck.

The Meddlesome Moth - A Gastropub Deluxe

Throughout my adult life, I've enjoyed good food and good beer with passion. Correction: I've enjoyed great food and great beer with passion. And I've frequented a number of well-known Dallas-Fort Worth bars/pubs/restaurants to do so. Places such as The Flying Saucer, The Cock & Bull, The Londoner (even when it was still on Greenville Avenue), The Dubliner, The Ginger Man, Trinity Hall, The Old Monk, The Idle Rich Pub, 8.0 and more.

Recently, my wife invited me to have lunch with her at the Meddlesome Moth. I had heard about the Meddlesome Moth from a couple of coworkers but had no concept of just how delightful a gastropub it is. That isn't a word I use frequently -- "delightful." But it really, really is.

The Meddlesome Moth is located at 1621 Oak Lawn, Dallas, TX 75207 in the design district. Upon crossing the threshold, my first impression was that this place is distinctly more upscale than I had expected. The decor is sleek and modern, punctuated with unique Texas art such as the three stained-glass windows from Dallas' original Hard Rock Cafe... contrary to the more antique or "traditional" decor of most of DFW's popular beer drinking establishments.

Yet, past that first blush, the Meddlesome Moth is casual and inviting. The staff is friendly, cheerful and helpful ... and they possess a deep knowledge and appreciation for the expansive selection of world class beers that they offer (as well as the tastefully stocked bar) and the eclectic, sophisticated menu.

You will find some of the expected beer-friendly menu items like hamburger and fish & chips. But don't expect them to be plain and boring. The menu directs you more to delicious dishes of mussels, lamb, "shin of beef", and even rabbit. The deserts are also not to be missed.

Do yourself a favor and make your way to the Meddlesome Moth if you are anywhere close to the design district.

Skyline - Dumbest Alien Movie EVER?

I'm sitting here watching Skyline with my 11-year-old son and I think this is possibly the dumbest sci-fi movie since Plan 9 From Outer Space. I don't know - maybe Plan 9 was better... at least it had a legendary actor in it!

The aliens in this film are so hokey it hurts. They seem to be a combination between the machines in The Matrix (okay - A LOT like the machines) and the aliens in Independence Day. But the effects in this film are really poor for this day and age.

Oh, and the love story subtext is lame. Was this movie made for TV? The most rewarding thing about this film is that I didn't pay to see it in a theater. Honestly, I may have slept through it.

Seriously. Jared's brain is going to save the world? I doubt it. Please don't let there be a sequel!
